Benjamin is 1!

Honestly, I am still in denial that this little man is 1! I adore his grin, his content personality, and love this handsome boy's place in our family!

With that said, at one year.....

Weight - 19lb, 6oz - 20%
Height - 29.5 in. -  30%
Benjamin remains our lean little man.  His head circumference remains in the 90th percentile.

Benjamin, you are a crawler!  A fast and busy crawler.  You mastered crawling and in the last 2 weeks have been working on pulling up.  You love pushing up to standing on the stairs or in the bath tub.  We are waiting for you to pull up on the couch or coffee table; we are sure you will cruise soon!
You got so many "boy" toys at Christmas, but your favorite remains opening mama's cabinets or pulling at daddy's books.  You keep Mama on her toes!

As you turned one, you had 5 words.  You can say, "mama," "dada," "nana" (meaning Anna-Kate), "yeah," and "woof woof"
Your newest trick is holding out one finger to say you are one!

You nurse 5 times a day right now.  I think I am going to start weaning you next week.  I am going to take my time to do it (maybe cut out a feeding every couple of weeks.  That first moment of the day is the one I get so emotional to give up).  Your dairy allergy was confirmed, so as you transition, we will try rice milk.

You love eating and let me know quickly when you are hungry.  You eat 3 meals a day and one snack.  You love fruit, but you also eat your veggies really well!  So far, you have also really loved every meat that I have offered.  As you demand more food, I am learning what a dairy-free diet will look like.  I am getting good at reading labels!

You have 4 teeth fully in.  You waited 11 months to finally show that first tooth.  Right now you are cutting numbers 5 and 6.

Benjamin, we feel spoiled to have you in our family!  You charm everyone with your easy grin and sweet laugh!  You adore your sister and she loves having you around.  We can't wait to celebrate you this weekend!

Am I Big Yet?

Natalie has gone to dance with us a couple times now.  She is n.o.t happy that Anna-Kate leaves her to do something else.  She will cry when AK disappears into the room.  Then she will periodically during the 45 minutes go stand at the door.  Is she saying, "Anna-Kate, are you done yet?  I am ready to play."  Or, is she saying, "I can be big.  I can do that too!"

I also love the timing of this picture.  You can see Anna-Kate looking up to her teacher.  Anna-Kate loves dance!  She is not very coordinated yet...but maybe that is coming!  They have really started talking up the recital.  Anna-Kate is really excited about that, but you can also tell she really has no idea what it is all about. It has definitely been a fun activity for her this year!

Our Snow Moment

Enjoying a few minutes in the snow before work!
Baby's first snow!

An excited big girl who loved telling us all about how to "bundle up for the winter snow"!

"Daddy, what can we do in the snow?!  Let's build a snow family.  A snow Benjamin and snow Anna-Kate and snow becca and snow Will and snow Anna-Kate!"  Sorry, sweetie this snow isn't very good for snowmen.

"But daddy, this snow is good to run in!"

 Let's go!

Happy (and totally content with) 10 minutes in the snow!

Wishing for more than 2.5 minutes in the snow!

Happy snow moment to you!  Maybe next time we will get some really good snowman-building snow!  Or, so Anna-Kate really wishes!

Learning to Draw

"Mommy, can I do my 'rasing markers?"

"Natalie can draw too, Mommy."

What do you think guys?

"Mommy, I am drawing a picture of daddy...I am drawing him arms.  He is Strong!  See."

Beautiful, girls!

Cheeeese!

Benjamin has learned a new skill...the art of the "Cheese!"
First, let me re-jog your memory.  Remember this awesome, quick-to-appear grin:

One day Benjamin surprised me by grinning a really big, cheesy grin.  Out of nowhere.  It was so cute!  It even came with this funny, excited little noise.  (This is a flashback to early Dec.)
Here it comes, wait for it...

And, here it is!
Cute.  But, not the sweet handsome smile of the first picture. Totally cute and kinda funny.

Well, fast forward one month, it is official.  Benjamin sees the camera and puts a smile on his face that totally says, "Cheese!"

With this cheesy grin and the fact that this is showing off his baby mullet that can no longer be tamed, I have no words, only a lot of giggling when my baby boy decides to cheese his grin at the camera!

Now, he is tired of the camera, off to demolish tall towers with a single swat!  Happy, sweet, normal grin back in place!

Our Update

What have we been doing since Christmas?
Spackling holes, painting over Spackle, vacuuming, and re-vacuuming, re-organizing, boxing up clutter, wiping down everything, ...
Of course that means

We are on the market!  Feel free to buy our house if you want to!  Or tell your friends about an awesome 3 bedroom townhome for sale!

Last week was the week of cleaning as well as the week of errands!  These two handled it better than expected, traipsing around town on more than one house-related errand!

Love this one of two little people chatting about their day!

Now, we wait for showings, a buyer and stalk the market to see what home God has for us next!

Birthday Date

January 13th!
a beautiful day, my birthday!
Between phone calls, texts, fb posts, lots of birthday holla's at church, I felt quite remembered!  The best card had to be from Anna-Kate.  Will said she looked intently for at least 15 minutes.  She landed on one that played royal music for this birthday queen.  Love seeing her thoughtful heart in action!

The highlight was the birthday date that Will planned.  We went to Glenwood Grill (on corner of Glenwood and Oberlin, for you Raleigh folks out there).  Will set up his parents as babysitters and picked the restaurant; the perfect set up for this girl!  I decided I wanted fru-fru.

Look at this amazing meal!
Crispy pork belly with thyme custard and an apple, onion, blue cheese and fig balsamic reduction

Scallops with ginger miso vinaigrette
Roasted beets, goat cheese, and pine nuts salad

Bailey's Chocolate Pie

I highly recommend this place!  The food was amazing!!!  I wanted decadent and delicious, and I definitely got both!  Because I mentioned it was my birthday, I was offered any dessert menu item for free.  I of course accepted! and I picked the chocolate-y amazingness that you see above.  The scallops all but melted in my mouth.  So good!  And, before I leave you in suspense for any longer, at least a few of you are probably thinking, "pork belly is decadent, what?!"   I didn't know this until yesterday, but bacon is deli-sliced pork belly.  All I knew is that on food network they say that pork belly is quite decadent when done well.
Delicious.  I will have a birthday meal again any time, if this is how I get to eat!

Christmas with the Simmons

12 days of traveling.  Whew.
We were back in Raleigh Christmas night, about 9 pm.  Will and I are both self-admitted home-bodies.  Shocker, I know!  Anna-Kate follows closely in our footsteps.  When we got home, 9pm, after 12 days of taveling that included 4 different homes and 25 hours cumulative hours in the car, we were so energized to be back home.  We were tired but so refreshed!  We loved our trip and every host was wonderful, but it was good to be home.

Before Christmas could be considered fully celebrated, we needed to celebrate with our Simmons family!

Oh no!  Who invited these Abonimable Snowmen to the party?!  Watch out Rudolph!

Anna-Kate and Benjamin were spoiled one last time!

And, we loved helping spoil our nephews and niece!

Evelyn loved Uncle Will!  She just climbed on his lap!  But, let's face it; he's smitten with her too!

We loved watching how Benjamin and Evelyn are already so aware of each other, starting to play with each other!

No comment, just lots of
lovin' it!

We don't see much of the big cousins when we hang out at Oma and Opa's.  They play school or church or draw or hide and seek or....  A goofy and confident Anna-Kate comes out when she hangs out with her cousins!

Until next year...

Christmas Morning

We ended our Tennessee trip in Shelby with my family for Christmas.  It was two days of relaxing and sleeping.  Then it was two days of  Christmas Eve and Christmas Day (days 11 and 12 of our trip).  Here are a few of the images of the final portion of our trip and Christmas morning:

We all loved when Benjamin crawled over to help the men with their project!

a dance party with Aunt Amanda is always on the to-do list!

Christmas morning
Love that Benjamin is all smiles, even starting to cheeese for the camera, while Anna-Kate is barely tolerating this with her Santa presents beside her un-opened!

No picture ever gets AK's amazing reactions to gifts.  She was all but vibrating with excitement when she pulled toothbrushes out of her stocking!

Is this what I think it is?!

Oh yay! It IS my Barbie!  I told Santa I wanted a Barbie!

Mom, this Christmas morning thing really is pretty fun!

obligatory baby in a box picture

Daddy's, I mean, Benjamin's favorite toy.  Little People come through and make a Batman in his Batmobile!

One of the best parts about kids on Christmas morning is that you finally have toys to play with again!
Playing her new Chutes and Ladders while Daddy and Gramps figure out Benjamin's new car garage.

Elmo is so much cooler when Batman comes to visit!

classic Miller family image!  Gramps, this one is for you!

I love watching my manly husband playing Barbies with his daughter!

Gramps in a more flattering pose!

And, happy Christmas to all!
